Fish Dance

After the past few weeks of below freezing temperatures and a heavy snow storm, it appears that spring has kicked in the past couple of days.

With the spring comes the migration of birds. The wintering birds have seemed to have gotten up and left. But the southern wintering birds are starting to arrive. I was enjoying some Red Headed ducks which I’ve never seen at the manor, when in swooped a Red Shoulder Hawk.

Left on the iced river was a fish. The hawk was so thrilled to have found the fish without having to work for it, he did the “I found a fish dance!”

Once found, he guarded the fish like a guard dog. Making sure no one came in to take his newly found prize.

He caught sight of me and gave me the stare.

It wasn’t me, I swear but someone caused him to take off. Leaving his prize on the ice. Perhaps he’ll come back when no one is looking.

  1. Oh, my, incredible photos!! Just out of curiosity, did you use a tripod and would you mind sharing your settings? That last photo of the hawk in flight just took my breath away!

    • Actually I ran quickly down to the dock to capture some redheaded ducks, so no tripod. I usually do use one though with the 500mm lens. As it was full light, Manual, 1/1250 sec, f/8.0, ISO 200. Daylight White balance. Thanks Judy ! I was so lucky to have him drop in while I was watching the ducks.

  2. I’m not sure you didn’t cause him to go, his eyes tell the story!! just kidding….great shots. Sometimes being lucky at being at the right place at the right time is as good as it gets!

  3. Yeah! So happy and joyful of a post. Great timing and eye catching this event. πŸ™‚ And great job capturing his great colors, what a beautiful bird. I feel bad for it though to have lost such an easy meal then lost it just as easily! Bummer.
